This year, I hope to offer my incoming 1st graders opportunities to play collaboratively, a skill that has looked very different over the past two school years because of Covid restrictions. The Brain Bins will be used as students transition into and out of the classroom during arrivals and dismissals and throughout the day during brief sensory and brain breaks. These Brain Bins will allow students to explore, build, create, and play with their classmates using high-quality STEM materials. Magnetic tiles, LEGO, bristle blocks, and other high-interest materials will fill each bin. Each day, students will be welcomed into the classroom with a Brain Bin filled with a low-pressure activity that provides an opportunity to practice social skills, problem-solving, collaboration, and more! As a bonus, many of these materials offer tactile engagement that has shown to provide a calming effect for students with a need for a sensory break. As Mr. Rogers said, "Play is really the work of childhood."
