We read nonfiction in order to learn about the world we live in. Because my sixth graders are not comfortable navigating nonfiction, they are lost without a compass, not just in school but in their lives. As a training academy in a school reform experiment which has gained national attention, my school has used the reading and writing workshop model to improve our Latino and African American students' literacy skills since it opened four years ago. Our test scores have made impressive progress, but most of the gains have been in reading fiction.

About my class
