My students are English language learners living in the poorest neighborhood in the state of Oregon. 98 % or our students qualify for free or reduced priced lunches. Many of them have illiterate parents who emigrated to the United States and are struggling to provide for their families. I work with the kindergarteners who are not only trying to learn to speak and understand English, but also to read. I feel a sense of urgency to help my students get up to speed in kindergarten so that they will not be further behind in 1st grade. This is a daunting task considering many of them did not go to pre-school and are consequently learning socialization and school readiness skills at the same time as they are expected to learn to read and write. Our school has full-day kindergarten, which is a great help, but the ESL students have to learn all the skills expected of the English speakers, while at the same time learning the English language.
