I teach middle school science at a public charter school in Pennsylvania. My school is in a pretty poor part of our city and most of the students are low-income, so they have limited access to educational opportunities outside of school. We are almost 100% African-American. Despite this, we are a high-achieving school and have received national honors for our great academic performance. Our middle school students love math and science - especially the girls! Many of our kids graduate high school and go on to college. But there is plenty of time for my students to lose interest or fall behind before they can take that step, so I am looking for new ways to spark and feed their passion about science and medicine as academic subjects and possible career paths.
