Our area of the country has a high incidence of autism and that is reflected in our student population. While some of the students with autism are fully mainstreamed, others need the support of specialized instruction through special education. Sometimes the support is in the area of academics, but often it involves learning skills such as how to cope with the sensory input of noises and crowds, as well as how to handle waiting for a turn because they can't take other people's perspectives. Sometimes in class, these students become so overwhelmed by sounds in the hallways, gym and cafeteria, they need some time to regroup before they are ready to learn in their classroom. Just a few minutes to relax their nervous systems can mean the difference between calmly learning or being on sensory overload and shutting down their ability to listen.
