I teach 26 energetic first graders excited to learn. Our school is a Title I public school in a culturally diverse neighborhood. My students and their families speak five different languages. Over the years I have observed that the more books children have access to the better readers they become. After reading and learning together in class students then take the books home to read with their families. This is where the learning really doubles. By taking these non-fiction books home all students have the opportunity to share and discuss in the primary language of the family. Reading together talking together and learning together.
