My students desperately need ample reading material that will excite them and also allow them to read independently. We need texts at their independent reading levels -- on a variety of topics, in various genres -- in order for students to grow. New books will increase student independence in my classroom, which will allow me to confer in small groups and one-on-one to meet diverse student needs. Gone are the days where teachers stand in front of the classroom and drone on from one text; we really need students digging in to books at various reading levels so they can grapple with content on their own. Right now, we have old titles with old pictures that are arcane and don't ignite student interest, and my readers have grown this year beyond the texts we have. As such, we really need a new array of books at the next reading levels that will allow me to not only "teach in" but also allow students to excel.
