The 8th grade students at my STEM school are remarkable - they're compassionate, humorous, and intelligent. Unfortunately, they face the hardships of poverty, prejudice, and violence on a regular basis, which contributes to stress levels within the range of PTSD. All of my students participate in the free lunch program and several receive services for trauma therapy. Some of my 8th graders read at a 1st grade level. Every day, I combat a growing sense of social abandonment that numbs engagement and academic growth. Each day, I build more trust and confidence, and our discussions of college and promising futures gain more meaning. Emotionally, my students are on their way to futures that contradict historical research and social expectations. Academically, there is much work to be done to ensure their success in high school and beyond. In order to support a wide range of reading skills, I need technology that will serve as a second pair or eyes and ears to support individual growth. Several research studies indicate that when students have access to content that reflects their individual interests and backgrounds, it increases engagement and understanding. Similarly, some research suggests that when students see their own academic efforts displayed, it increases self-reflection, confidence and empowerment. I believe that with the GoPro Camera, I will be able to achieve both.
