My pre-kindergarten students attend a Title 1 school in a large urban school district in Southern California. All students at the school qualify for the federal free lunch program. Ninety six percent of the student population is Latino. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and Spanish is the primary language spoken at home. By the end of the year, my students are expected to exhibit certain preschool writing competencies outlined by the California State Department of Education. Due to overcrowding issues and a lack of classrooms , I share my room with another teacher. Together we provide services to 72 young children on a daily basis. Even though my prekindergarten students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, they always come to school excited, curious, and eager to learn. When they arrive at school every day they ask, "What are we going to do today?" They are always ready to explore and make discoveries about the world around them.
