Our school is a Title 1 school which is defined as a school with "high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families." Most of our students are at or below the poverty line and have little access, especially middle school aged children, to fitness programs other than organized sports or gym memberships (which are highly restricted by age, and hugely unaffordable for our families). We have a large percentage of overweight children in the building and a rising number of students with diabetes and weight related illnesses. About 4 years back, the school was on the verge of failure and closing down due to poor attendance, high suspension rates and poor scores on state exams. A new principal took over and every year the school has improved more and more. With all the great improvements to academics, physical fitness often gets put on the back burner.
