I am a Bilingual Social Worker servicing children with various degrees of disability in NYC's District 75 schools. I have a caseload of about 39 students that I see for individual and group counseling as part of their Individualized Educational Plan. Depending on the day, I work with children classified with either emotional disturbance, learning disability, autism or visual impairment. They come from some of the most poverty stricken areas in NYC and so all children are entitled to free meals in school. My students present with either challenging behaviors within the classroom, significant cognitive and/or developmental delays and/or require adaptive equipment in order to communicate and complete school assignments. My students require alternative approaches to traditional counseling techniques filled with creativity and hands on materials in order to engage them in session and promote prosocial behaviors.
