The materials are for a series of design challenges in the Maker Space this year. We have requested a variety of building materials to give our students diverse options to solve the challenges. The Maker Space provides valuable learning opportunities for our students to develop agency as designers while learning teamwork, empathy, and working through problems. The first design challenge is a puppet challenge: Students upcycle a spoon to create and build a character that meets the design requisites and constraints. The project incorporates interdisciplinary learning objectives: character development, combining matter, and an understanding of sequence and cooperation. For example, one student made the character Pigeon (Mo Willems) and another made a puppet of Cesar Chavez. They applied what they knew about each of these characters to develop a unique dialogue. Our second design challenge will be a marble maze. We will look to Kane's arcade for inspiration and work in teams to design, build, test, and improve our mazes. As our students complete the challenges and share their designs, they develop an understanding of materials, failure as First Attempt in Learning, engineering processes, creativity and grit as lifelong assets.
