History can come alive when students see their favorite TV shows explain the complicated governmental policies they are trying to wrap their minds around in the classroom. For years our high school seniors have torn through the readings for our American Government class without a true understanding. For years I have sat at home watching West Wing; thinking, if only my students were watching this, they would have a true grasp on the policy we have hacking away at for the past week. Our students are driven to learn and understand the importance playing a role in government; this comes through analyzing and understanding. This is a public high school that does not let the confinements of high-need get in its way. This academic high school is the only public school in the District that offers an International Baccalaureate Program. These students not only want an education, they demand it.
