My students are first graders at a school from a low income limited opportunity community in southeast Kansas. However they are highly motivated to learn. At our school our reading block includes balanced literacy instruction. While the teacher is working with a small group of students the remaining students are working independently at centers. The centers need to have engaging and structured activities to enhance students reading skills.
