My 7th grade students will analyze the complex, classic novel, "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway as part of a survival-themed ELA unit. The unit aligns with the Common Core standards which require that students read complex literature and non-fiction texts. My ELA curriculum stresses critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills that provide success in college, career, and life. By reading this novel and other supplemental texts, I hope to open their world to the magical, complex country of Cuba and introduce them to one of our finest novelists. I will also be incorporating the recent travel experiences of myself and my colleagues.
