Our school is located a mile from the closest subway stop, and serves students from all over the big city. Although relatively high-performing, most of our students come from low-income families. Even when we asked them to rent calculators for a refundable $20, many of them could not do so. Often, these students ask to be seated in the front of the class, because they don't have glasses. (That shows, by the way, that they want to learn.) These are, almost invariably, good students. They shush each other to get through lessons when I was a new teacher, and most of them do homework and try their best. Our school alone has lost about $4 million in funding since the early Bloomberg years, but we work with no excuses. With your help, we can give our students the best education they can have. Every bit of help is truly appreciated.
