My students are 7th and 8th graders in a small charter school in one of the lowest performing districts in the state of Michigan. This is my second year at the school but my first year teaching middle school science. For the past several years, the school has scored 0.00% proficient on the science MEAP. My students are all African-American and most qualify for free or reduced price lunch. They all have the potential to do great things but have the misfortune of attending a school that cannot supply what they need.
