I teach in an alternative school in one of the most diverse urban communities in the country. My students live in a variety of family situations, both traditional and non-traditional. Some of my students have resources at home that greatly enhance their educational experience. Others barely survive. My students range in age from nine to eleven and they are in an ungraded classroom. Various assessments show that they range in ability from reading on the second grade level up to high school. Reader's Workshop, with guided reading and book clubs, is the best way to do reading instruction with such a diverse group.
