Research is showing that some students are able to show significant improvement in educational performance when given opportunities for flexible seating that allows them greater comfort in their learning environment. Some especially successful types of seating are those requested in this proposal. They are, the Wobble Chair, Physio balls, and opportunities to learn while standing. Following are a few of the specific improvements that studies have shown. 1. An increased sense of community in the classroom happen when students are inspired to take turns and share supplies. 2. Additional collaboration among students has been observed as this type of seating gives greater ease when they pair up or work in groups. 3. With the increased movement made acceptable, students can sit, kneel, wiggle, lean, roll, etc., and release excess energy, while building core strength. 4. When students experience increased comfort they are more relaxed and more focused. 5. Many flexible seating options stimulate students’ sensory input. 6. Students show increased motivation and seem to learn best when they have some control over their environment. Having these alternative seating options in the classroom would give the students opportunities for increased learning in all areas rather than a daily focus on the correct way to sit in a chair.
