My students need more books at their independent reading level to be able to gain confidence in their individual reading. Research has shown that the more varied texts that a beginning reader reads, the greater the vocabulary development in that reader. These nonfiction leveled readers can help children in their literacy as well as science and social studies topics that are part of the first grade core curriculum. COVID-19 found that my first graders did not get the enriched kindergarten classes that they have in the past. On-line learning, shortened days and varied weekly schedules have put these children behind in their independent reading. My students need to be immersed in books, books, books and I found that my classroom reading library is not as built up for extended independent reading as I would like. I would love to have more resources to help my students on their reading journey!
