My Kindergarten students are sweet children who come from very impoverished homes. Our area of Mississippi was the worst hit by Hurricane Katrina. The families are still struggling. The children have had little or no exposure to the fundamental items needed for early literacy: paper, pencils, crayons, etc. I need to demonstrate and model the basics of writing during large and small group lessons: we create messages together! I model writing and then allow the students to "share the pen" with me to write letters and words. This technique of "interactive writing" gives the children the support they need to learn how to write letters, words, and sentences. As they learn and become more successful and confident using print, I step back and allow them to do more of their own writing, from generating ideas, to creating illustrations, and constructing text.
