I teach at an early college high school in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains with an unemployment rate of 13%; therefore,funding is extremely tight. Eighty percent of my students are first generation college bound,65% are minority, and over 85% receive free/reduced lunch. They are thirsty for reading material that is of interest and value. Social issues are of a great interest, and they enjoy a lively and controversial discussion or debate.
