My students are profoundly autistic children growing up in urban Milwaukee. They face significant challenges both in and beyond the classroom, including poverty, instability, and limited access to consistent supports. They experience the world intensely—sounds, transitions, and communication can feel overwhelming. When they struggle, it is not defiance but communication, expressing unmet needs for safety, structure, and connection. Despite these challenges, my students show remarkable resilience and joy. They celebrate small successes, build trust deeply, and make meaningful progress when given the right supports. In a city shaped by long-standing inequities, they deserve learning environments designed with intention, dignity, and compassion. With appropriate supports, these students can feel safe, regulated, and included—because every child deserves the opportunity to learn in a space that honors who they are.
