“Entire books have been written about the causes of the American Revolution. You’ll be glad to know this isn’t one of them.” With these opening lines, our students will be drawn into learning about the origins of our country, and the nature of historical “truth.” They will build on this understanding by tracing the national values established at our country’s beginnings across the United States Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, and significant amendments such as the abolishment of slavery, Prohibition, and women’s suffrage. By the end of the year, they will be able to argue their position on the question, “Did the Constitution Establish a Just Government?” Using what they have learned from reading secondary sources (like the book on King George), in combination with their analysis of various primary source documents, the students will develop an informed action project that will impact the school or community. This book offers an engaging introduction to this year-long journey by providing a view of American history, "with the good bits put back!"
