My students are struggling to figure out what a "normal" day looks like anymore. I have a student that has insomnia and struggles to stay awake in class. When I asked him what I could do to help, he told me that if he could stand up to work, it would help him stay awake for class. I have other students who prefer to sit on the floor. Since I have been more flexible in where they can sit in my room, I have noticed that they are more likely to stay on task and focus. By giving students a variety of choices on where they learn in my classroom, it will help them stay focused on learning and engaged in whatever activity we may be doing. Before this school year started, I purchased a couch for my room where students take turns sitting. This small addition has made such a positive difference in the attitude and confidence in my classroom. They tell me it makes them feel safe and excited to learn. We all know that when we are not comfortable, it is difficult to focus on anything else. I want to give my students the chance to sit where they are most comfortable. This helps them know that I care about them and their education and want to do everything in my power to make them successful. Being able to offer a variety of flexible seating options will be a benefit for all of my students this year and for years to come.
