ESL methodology includes supports that are visual. Hence, I don’t just speak to my kids, I look at them and gesture and demonstrate the movement of my mouth as I articulate. However, needing to present and refer to another document at the same time I am distracted by the need to click onto various tabs. A second screen would solve this problem. It would also allow me to be more attentive to my students, really watching their faces for signs of confusion (ESL students are notoriously shy about asking for explanations) while reading from another document. The ESL kids are a small group but we are a close one. When the kids are intimidated in their larger subject classes filled with “American” kids who seem to understand everything they don’t, they come to me for help. Our class is their safe haven and my office hours become a tutoring session for not only other subjects but even other concerns such as working papers, getting medical insurance, applying for college, etc. I try my best to support them as I know they all have enormous potential, but I can’t do it alone. As I tell them all the time, we can all use a little help.
