As educators, we know the risks associated with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). We understand why our students with significant trauma have difficulty in school. We do our best to empathize and support these students. We struggle to manage and modify a wide array of student behaviors from completely shutting down to physical aggression. We know the future risks, continued lagging skills, and academic deficits for these students; what we don't always know is what to do about it! Research tells us that chronic stress and trauma can change the brain and have long-term health consequences. However, this does not mean high ACE scores and chronic stress equals a lifetime of problems! The good news is research also tells us that responsive relationships and supportive communities can re-route the negative pathways in the brain and buffer the effects of ACEs. Becoming a Certified Trauma Practitioner – Education (CTP-E®) will allow me to train staff throughout my district on trauma informed principles so they can confidently support students with significant trauma. I hope to build a supportive community of trauma informed professionals across the district that will be a voice for students who might not yet have the skills to advocate for themselves. I want to equip all teachers with the tools to "change their lens" when looking at challenging behavior.
