I went to a GSTA (Georgia Science Teacher Assoc) conference and was really inspired by the work of a UGA graduate student. Games in the classroom can have a variety of benefits: facilitating collaborative problem solving, a fun environment to learn content, less screen time, and more human interaction, and each game has a literacy component. For Life Science, we use stations for learning and a board game could represent one station in a rotation of learning stations. In my STEM class, we could have a weekly or biweekly game day; which enhances problem-solving, helps kids learn to work together, and introduces content in a way they may not have been exposed to otherwise. Lastly, we also could use games as incentives! For example, if we reach the "x" goal we will all have a game day. The overall goal would be for kids to collaborate, learn, and strategize through using board games.
