My students attend a Title I school in a high-poverty area. Apathy wafts through the halls and lingers in the hearts and minds of students. This year alone, two students have already died to gun violence and that's only added to the sense of hopelessness. Out of about 225 juniors, only 10 signed up to take the Advanced Placement English Language Composition course. After taking a practice AP exam, they know they have some catching up to do, and they're working hard to close that gap and earn a passing score. Since the school year began, my students have become avid readers devouring articles from The Economist, The New York Times, and USA Today. They're currently reading their fifth novel, Lord of the Flies, and loving it, but they need more exposure to all types of writing styles and purposes if they're going to pass the test.
