I have a classroom of 28 students. More than half of my students are below grade level in reading. They lack the skills and the opportunities to improve their reading. My students come from different ethnic and economic backgrounds. All of them speak English, but several come from homes where only Spanish or another language is spoken. The parents in these homes have a difficult time reading to their child, or helping them with basic learning skills. Also, several of my students do not have computers or books in their home, so do not have that additional opportunity to learn. When I read to my students each day, their eyes are wide with excitement! They listen to every detail of the books I read. It is improving their imagination and giving them a chance to develop a love for reading. Listening Centers will give students yet another opportunity to hear stories read to them. It will help instill a love for learning and a love for reading that I hope will stay with them always.
