My students attend a very ethnically and financially diverse urban school in Texas. We have a high percentage of transfers, students from graduate student housing, and homeless students. Because our students aren't primarily neighborhood kids, one of our priorities is bringing students, parents, and teachers together to create a strong school community. Along with this also comes our dedication to teaching our students the skills necessary to lead emotionally and socially strong lives. Many of our students, especially our homeless, come to school seeking routine, friendship, and support. This can be accomplished when they feel a sense of belonging in our community.
