Our school is a Performing/Visual Arts & Environmental Sciences Magnet school in the public school system. We are a title 1 school with our students coming from lower income families. Grades K - 3 are instructed in a modified Suzuki string program and grades 4&5 learn through a general string curriculum. The students recieve instruction once a week with their class and 27 students come to rehearsals for two hours in our after-school orchestra. After-school attendance is never an issue. There are two additional performing groups for grades 1-3. Many of our students have auditioned and been accepted in prestigious youth orchestras in the community and many have gone on to performing arts public schools in our district. The students themselves are evidence that through playing their instrument they develop sensitivity, discipline and life skills. The students have instruments in their hands for home practice but they desparately need books
