My students live in an urban neighborhood of New York. I teach a 1st grade class of English Language Learners. Most of my students have immigrated here from other places such as Africa, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and many other parts of Latin America. Most of my students speak languages other than English at home. In our classroom, we focus on developing the English Language through content area instruction. In other words, I teach all subjects (Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science) through a lens which focuses on English language development. Our classroom usually maintains a wonderful sense of community and students are encouraged to share and be proud of their heritage.
