I teach 4th graders, and sometimes it is hard for my students to understand how the skills and knowledge they are learning in the classroom will actually transfer into the real world. With the help of a 3D printer to create prototypes and solve problems, my students will no longer ask "Why do I have to learn this?!" Instead, they will see their learning come to life as they research, problem solve, and design their way through the creative process. One project my students will be doing is designing an amusement park. Students will use their science, engineering, and mathematical skills to design rides. With a 3D printer, my students could see their amusement park actually take form instead of just being drawn on a poster. Students will be using skills they learn in many different content areas as they design and revise their prototypes. Having a 3D printer in the classroom will not only foster engagement as students share their learning in 3d form, but it will also bring creativity and fun into the classroom!
