Kinetic sand trays will allow students to partake in a multi-sensory learning experience. During phonics instruction, I will be able to provide my students with the opportunity to use visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile techniques to learn how to read and spell. These multi-sensory experiences will help them create new neural pathways in the brain. Making sure they participate in kinesthetic/tactile activities is an essential component of multi-sensory learning. Currently my students are using dry-erase markers and mini whiteboards to when learning about reading and writing sounds/words. In the new school year, I am hoping to start using sand trays to enhance my phonics instruction. All learning happens through the senses, which act as pathways to the brain. The sand and trays I have selected will become one of the multi-sensory tools I will use during a phonics lesson. It will become a beneficial tactile tool to use when introducing new sounds/letters. Students will write the sounds they hear in the sand tray, which will increase their chance of retaining the new information being learned! The best way to target the learning needs and strengths of ALL students is by delivering multi-sensory lessons, and these trays will help my students grow as readers and writers through the sense of touch.
