My 8th graders come from a low-income community in Oklahoma, and over 90% are on free or reduced lunch. They are Caucasian, African American, Mexican American, and Native American with varying levels of English mastery and math proficiency. At my school, every student will be dual-enrolled in community college or a trade-school program as juniors and seniors, provided they meet the minimum entrance requirements. This means that they must score a 19 on their ACT in order to stay at the school as upperclassmen. This is an incredible opportunity for our kids, but many of our middle school students do not currently have the math skills to successfully reach a 19. Our department is working very hard to get these kids to be college-ready in math so that they can break through the ceiling of poverty.
