My 142 witty and intelligent Algebra 1 students attend a Title 1 public high school in Oklahoma that serves a diverse population of students who all receive free and reduced lunch. The vast majority of my students live in extreme poverty and must overcome extraordinary obstacles while attempting to succeed in high school. Many of my students live in single parent homes or in foster care. Others can no longer count the number of times they have switched schools due to personal, academic, and disciplinary issues. After years of being pushed through schools and having extremely low expectations for themselves, my students are finally taking control of their educational outcomes in order to become change agents for their community. In spite of all that they face, these bright young adults are working to regain a sense of possibility in themselves and their situation.
