My high school-aged students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and have equally diverse aptitudes. Their reading levels range from late elementary to 12th grade. Given that all the students are ethnic minority, the school has struggled to adapt its curriculum to meet their unique interests. Thus, finding entry points for them to become engaged readers and active students has been difficult. This course is designed to directly meet those needs. The students in this course have strong opinions about the social injustice that is inherent part of life in their communities. Through the literature we read together, it is my hope to inspire social engagement, inform their opinions and ultimately, empower their academic skills.
