I teach at a highly diverse public charter school in Illinois, a home and safe space for a vibrant community of young people. Many of my students are recent immigrants and refugees who struggle with the pains of adjustment and integration as they create their own sense of self. Over thirty languages are spoken at my school, and providing my students ample opportunities to make connections, share knowledge, and build understanding is crucial. My fifth graders are bright, innovative, and caring individuals who are working to create a strong community in which they feel valued, challenged, powerful, and supported.
