LeVar Burton said, "Literature is political," and I cannot agree more. If we want our next generation of leaders, allies, and voters to be well informed, shouldn't we start by giving them access to rich, diverse, and intentional books to expand their minds? As a dedicated, anti-racist educator, I want to continue creating a proactive and safe environment to engage students in difficult conversations and address different factors that build and shape our identities, bias, and perspectives. We need to give students the information to get it right, otherwise, how do they know? Help me equip these eighth graders with the right tools to take on the world, such as reading quality and relatable literature, so they are prepared for whatever comes their way!
