Binoculars are desperately needed for my classroom since my students are currently using toilet paper roll binoculars on our bird walks. They do not magnify the birds or allow the students to clearly see the beautiful details present on birds. Kids aren't excited about our current bird walks because they don't get to see any details and really only get to see an outline of a bird. How can I expect a kid to fall in love with birds if they can't see what they are even looking at?! My ultimate goal is to open my students' eyes and get them to actually be present in the world around them using binoculars and Cornell University's eBird online. The Bird Sleuth Educator Camp 2018 at Cornell University helped increase my own knowledge of birds and how to utilize binoculars to get the best experience out of making observations outside. My students not only want this—they also really NEED this to help eliminate and eradicate "bird blindness."
