My school suffered through a tornado this past summer. If teaching them to read wasn't hard enough last year, it is twice as difficult this year. Our school population lay in the direct path of the tornado. Ninety percent of the children lost their homes and are living in FEMA trailers. So, having books at home are low on the list of priorities of the parents. Our school is great little neighborhood school. They love to learn and parents are actively involved with parent organizations. Learning how to deal with loss is big this year. I would love to have books to send home with the children so parent/child relationships could be fostered to secure a small sense of normal activity for my class.
