Like many 8- and 9-year-olds, my third graders are energetic, bright, and eager to succeed. They struggle, however, with the challenge of growing up in poverty and academically, most are behind their peers in more affluent communities. They attend a high-need school in Oklahoma where 100% of students receive free or reduced lunch and basic materials like pencils, paper, and books are scarce. Despite this, they have all set a goal of making 1.5 years of growth in reading by May. They know that becoming strong readers will allow them to be successful in school and in life. I am doing everything I can to ensure that they have the tools and support they need to be ready for 4th grade and beyond.
