My students have handicapping conditions that include Intellectual Disability (ID or Mental retardation), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Other Health Impairment such as cerebral palsy and speech impairment. Everyday that I am able to work with them in the classroom is a challenge but it has also become more of a joy and a blessing. In the classroom, the focus is on getting the students become more independent learners and capable of achieving critical academic goals such as reading. This past year, I have been working on getting the students to read sight words to develop automaticity and thereby reduce anxiety levels. This has certainly helped build their level of confidence. Each week, I see my students show progress in their sight word reading abilities but there is much work to be done. We need to continue building their ability to read across all subject areas and help them apply reading as a skill in ways that makes more meaning in their life.
