To say I love my job is an understatement! Most of my 2nd grade students come into the classroom in the beginning of the school year reading simple, repetitive texts. By the end of the year they all are bookworms and many are reading chapter books. That is because reading is not seen as a challenge (even for struggling readers) because of the atmosphere created in our classroom right from the start and the many books of various levels and topics in our room. With state standards and tests, our days our extremely busy. While dancing, movement, and hands on activities are used to teach the curriculum; much is expected of my students at a very young age. Self selected reading time offers my students a time to "be in charge" of what they are reading and helps instill a love of literacy.
