Students in my classroom look at the world through the lens of designers. We engineer items to solve real-world problems. For example, student desks are not big enough to safely house their water bottle and a Chromebook. So, this past week we used the engineering design process to create water bottle holders for our desks. We are testing and evaluating this week. We also use curriculum such as Engineering is Elementary. One of our favorite units is one where we design water filters to help save turtles in the Amazon River from polluted water. With an aquaponics system in our classroom, students will have the opportunity to use their design lens to engineer something in nature. Sometimes we get in a habit of solving mechanical types of problems. This would allow us to put an intense focus on the biological science part of our STEM school focus. One of our favorite 5th grade science units is about how ecosystems work together. This would give them real-world, hands-on experience tying together their science learning with design process thinking. They will be inspired to keep problem solving and designing in order to keep both plants, animals, and bacteria balanced and alive.
