I teach at a modestly-sized public high school in California where budget cuts have been deep and long-lasting. However, our graduation rate is one of the highest in the area, and over half of our top students are students of colour. Our AP classes have the same demographics as our intervention classes. Our teachers regularly work 12 hour days then go home to do more work; but one thing we are assured of is that our students feel supported and cared for. My students are usually curious, persistent, creative, and hard-working and are desperate for an education. I love my job, my school, and my kids but they need more support than I can give them to reach their potential.
