Our school is a Title 1, Program Improvement school that serves a low socio-economic area. Many of my students entered fifth grade at least 1-2 years below grade level in both reading and writing, and many of them are English language learners. One of the major issues I'm seeing is that they have extremely limited vocabularies. A lack of literacy-rich home environments compounds the deficiency, so it's my task to find every opportunity to expand their vocabularies and help them to find a love for reading.
