The students are 99% African American and 83.5 in the school year of 2012 received free or reduced lunch. The school has been in the news for the wrong reasons, but our students attendance has increased in 2012, the highest at 94.5% in five years. Our students want to learn but they have more obstacles to overcome than the average preschool through sixth grade students. The students attend a Title I school, as well as a Focus school. A Title I school as any school, in which, over 40% of the students population receives free or reduced lunch. A Focus school is a Title I school whose student gap groups are among the lowest-performing in the state over the past three years. The students are now under more pressure as a Focus school to achieve higher test score regardless of the responsibility to go home and assist younger siblings with dinner and/or homework. They are still resilient in their high crime neighbor and many still want to learn.
