My students are located in a very overpopulated school in an extremely impoverished area of Texas. They are second language learners and constantly struggle with science vocabulary and background knowledge needed to understand basic scientific content. My students, as well as for all the students in our school, are coming to school wearing the harsh burdens of family issues, unstable living conditions, and learning a second language on their young shoulders. They come to school everyday for many reasons: to receive an education, escape from harsh home conditions, shelter, food, companionship, etc. But whatever their reasons may have initially been for entering our school doors, we teachers have made the commitment to ensure that they leave those same doors with the knowledge, skills and motivation to change their lives and to become the navigator of their own voyage.
